SUSTAINABILITY<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>

Humanity is responsible for causing a lot of destruction to the natural world, with wildlife halving in less than a generation. We\u2019re the only species driving the planet to a tipping point.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0That\u2019s why I decided to create a business to try and help prevent the devastation we\u2019re causing. Striving to go about business in a sustainable way didn\u2019t feel like a choice to me, it felt like a necessity to the future of the planet.<\/span><\/p>

ART IN CREATION<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>

I think it is important to be transparent. Not every action I take is beneficial to the planet; however, when this is the case I try my best to neutralise any negative effect I have on nature.<\/span><\/p>

The first example of this is paper. Paper is my favourite surface to paint onto and at some point a tree gets cut down in order to get that paper. At the moment I\u2019m not using recycled paper to produce my original artwork. This is because I'm currently working my way through the heap of art pads that I had as a teenager and never finished.<\/span><\/p>

As I\u2019m using virgin paper, for every original piece of artwork I create, I plant at least one tree. How do I know these trees get planted? I\u2019m the one doing the planting. I plant native species here in the UK, in areas where they\u2019ve got the best chance of taking deep roots for years to come. The Earth has lost over half of its forest cover.<\/span><\/h3>

As well as physically planting trees myself, I also plant using the internet. I do a fair amount of research for my work, such as looking for ways to help wildlife. When I\u2019m doing that work I use Ecosia, a search engine that uses its profits to plant trees, at no cost to the user. So far I\u2019ve planted at least 95 trees using this really simple tool!<\/span><\/p>

I also have to use electronic devices a lot, for example, I often find reference material online. Rather than printing these images out, I use my phone instead, this way avoiding the impacts of paper and ink. ART IN PRODUCTION<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

I use a platform called Teemill to produce my products. It\u2019s very important for me to work alongside a company who carry out business with the same morals. They have a factory in the Isle of Wight where my products are produced sustainably. Here\u2019s how:<\/span><\/p>

All products are vegan, and made from natural materials. Prints are printed on recycled paper and so no tree is cut down directly in order to make them. Lower impact inks are used, which come in recyclable plastic containers.<\/span><\/p>

Clothing is made using 100% sustainable cotton, which is much more eco-friendly than conventional cotton. The cotton is grown and made into garments in India, using an ethically accredited, wind powered factory. GOTS and SA8000 certifications ensure fair pay and working conditions in the factory.<\/span><\/p>

The garments are shipped from India to the UK. Opting for shipping instead of airfreight means carbon emissions are much lower.<\/span><\/p>

When it comes to printing on the Isle of Wight, the products are produced in real-time and so they won\u2019t be printed until after they\u2019ve been ordered. This means no product gets wasted, which is much better for the planet.<\/span><\/p>

Renewable energy is used throughout the supply chain. We can't do everything perfectly by nature, but we can try our best.<\/span><\/h3>

My easel was made from virgin wood. I shopped around to find a second-hand one but unfortunately, nothing suitable was available. For this reason I made a donation to the Rainforest Trust's project to protect Indonesia's Leuser Ecosystem, the only place on Earth where elephants, orangutans, tigers and rhinos share a habitat. The project will restore deforested land back to its original ecology, expanding an essential wildlife corridor for these species and many others. As well as being home to some of my favourite animals, this project is very important to me as these forests are mostly at risk due to human activity in the western world, mainly the demand for palm oil.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps the least sustainable part of my business is paint, which sadly comes in unrecyclable packaging. I try my best to squeeze every drop of paint out before the tube has to go in the bin. Unfortunately, there seems to be no better alternative available at the moment. To counter this, I try my best to reduce my everyday plastic consumption. In addition, I organise regular litter picks in my area, as well as when travelling. My Mum and I can often be found at our local beach and park collecting litter.<\/span><\/p>

I still use a lot of my paintbrushes that I had as a teenager and rarely have to buy new ones. When I do buy new, I opt for synthetic ones instead of those made with animal hair. I\u2019m currently using up some old leftover party paper plates as my palette. Our actions will decide the future of our planet.<\/span><\/h3>

I\u2019m a person who likes lists. These are either written on my phone or on the backs of receipts and used envelopes. In addition, I use a refillable plastic-free pen for any necessary writing.<\/span><\/p>

I've also tried to be as sustainable as possible with my finances. Few people know that many banks are using our money to drive the fossil fuel industry; not so good for global warming! Huge volumes of clothing end up in landfill sites around the world, causing much harm to the planet. Circular fashion is certainly a way in which we can massively reduce the impact clothing has on the Earth. This is why my clothing products are all designed to be remanufactured when they come to the end of their life. They can be sent back to the factory on the Isle of Wight and the material will be made into a new product, preventing waste. It\u2019s free to post back and you\u2019ll even get money off future orders. You can find the details as to how to send items back when you're finished with them on the item's label.<\/span><\/p>

Humanity also currently dumps eight million tonnes of plastic into the sea every year.
